Our Mission

Singapore Brutalist Architecture Archive hopes to be the first online website that people think of when they think of Brutalist Architecture in Singapore.

Singapore, a small city state, has a unique architectural scene due to our colonial past. With our urban landscape constantly changing and with buildings constantly built and brought down, conservation of buildings remains a core aspect of Urban Redevelopment Authority’s (URA) work. Land is an extremely scarce and precious resource due to our size. Although more than 7,000 buildings have been conserved as of 2019, not all buildings can preserved.

Brutalist architecture is usually deemed as not worth conserving in our postmodern era. Hence, we want to gather in one space the existing, slated for demolition and demolished local buildings of brutalist descent. Beyond just a site, we hope this archive will give viewers insights into realising that brutalist architecture is beautiful in its own way, and that architecture is actually closely linked to built heritage and consequently our Singaporean identity.
